2007’s Top Three Books for Historical Romance

Title: If His Kiss is Wicked
Author: Jo Goodman
Rating: A

If His Kiss is Wicked is the first Jo Goodman book that I have read. There have been discussions about this book over at the Romantic Times message boards and many have picked this book to be their favorite for 2007. I hadn’t heard of it before that, but if everyone is singing its praises, then I need to see what all the fuss is about. I am really happy to say this book did not disappoint. What I thought was refreshing about the book was that the characters were genuine to the period. They were not twenty-first century people immersed in a nineteenth century story. There also was a nice mystery that the story focused on, as well as a passionate romance. I will definitely be looking into Goodman’s other works.

Title: Lessons of Desire
Author: Madeline Hunter
Rating: A

Lessons of Desire is the second book of the Rothwell Series, featuring Elliot Rothwell and Phaedra Blair. What I loved about this book was the character Phaedra. She is not like any other heroine I have encountered in a historical romance. Her philosophy on women’s lib is before her time. She doesn’t understand all of society’s many rules and doesn’t follow them. She relishes her independence from MEN. It cracks me up because, throughout the whole book, she keeps ending up in one scrape after another, and as much as she hates it, Elliot is the one she has to depend on the get her out of these situations. I thought it made for a jolly good read. Elliot was a great match for Phaedra every step of the way.

Title: Mine Till Midnight
Author: Lisa Kleypas
Rating: A-

Yes, I have jumped on the Kleypas bandwagon. For a deliciously light-hearted romance, chock full of fun, interesting characters, she can’t be beat. This book is no exception and both Cam and Amelia are a delight. Each is a very likeable character. Amelia is the glue trying to hold her (sometimes selfish) family together against the odds. Cam whisks into the picture to rescue her and solve all her problems. Sigh, I am such a sucker for this type of story line. The story moved along at a brisk pace which kept me turning the pages quickly, and I can’t wait to read about Merripen and Winnie in the next book of the series.

You are in for such a treat with Jo Goodman. I've been reading her for years and could never figure out why she wasn't more widely known and read. But it looks like she is finally beginning to get her due. She has quite an extensive backlist and I recommend many of them!
And as for Lisa Kleypas - she is another author whose books I've loved for years and years.

I have both the Goodman and the Hunter in my TBR too. I really have to get to them. I've heard great things about both.

Kristi - Yes, I was just thrilled with Goodman and after Februray (when the AAR reader poll is closed) I will be glomming her like crazy! This past year I discovered Lisa Kleypas and I read 12 of her books :)

Wendy - LOL, you.must.move.it.to.the.top!

Jennie - I hope you like Hunter's book. I have read a few negative reviews on it. I think the reason people didn't like the book was because they didn't like Phaedra, but I loved her. It just goes to show how varied everyones taste are.

I loved If His Kiss. Such an amazing read. I still haven't read the LK. It's been in my TBR for ages. I really need to get on that.

I think I have the MH TBR, also. So many books, so little time. :)

I keep on picking up If His Kiss at the book store then putting it back. I need to buckle down and get it next time.

I'm looking forward to Kleypas' next book. The one featuring Win and Meripen. I really liked them in Mine Till Midnight.

Holly and Brie,

I was pleasantly surpised by this book because there have been many times someone recommended a book to me and it wasn't all that great. I am happy to say that wasn't the case with If His Kiss is Wicked. I do hope when you get around to reading it that you like it.
