Classic Romance Challenge 2008

Jennie started this challenge over at her blogspot Jennie's B(ook)log and I am going to take the challenge. Mine is going to be a little different because I have already read some of the books on her list. I have heard so much talk about Sweet, Savage Love and Whitney, My Love that I had to include them. I have been meaning to get around to reading them but never have. Hopefully, this challenge will give me the proper motivation! My list is as follows:

1. To Love and to Cherish, Patricia Gaffney
2. The Shadow and the Star, Laura Kinsale
3. Thunder and Roses, Mary Jo Putney
4. Whitney, My Love, Judith McNaught
5. Sweet, Savage Love, Rosemary Rogers
6. The Flame and the Flower, Kathleen Woodiwiss
7. The Last Hellion, Loretta Chase
8. Bliss, Judy Cuevas
9. Years, LaVyrle Spencer
10. Annie’s Song, Catherine Anderson
11. As You Desire, Connie Brockway
12. The Secret Pearl, Mary Balogh

Jill, the Anderson, Chase and Kinsale books are fantastic! I look forward to reading your views on them.

Jace,

I thought this was a great idea that Jennie had. Are you going to participate too?

I will say I am skeptical about the Kinsale book because I have read a couple of her books before and I didn't like them. It was basically because I didn't like the characters. I didn't even finish Shadowheart. I will be giving it a try and I hope I keep an open mind!

I'm so glad you'll be joining in! A most excellent list you have. :) I don't think I've ever heard of Rosemary Rogers! I'll be really interested to hear what you think of that one.

Yes, indeed. *grin* I've put up my list on my blog.

I've read almost all of Kinsale's books and yes, not all of them are readable. I haven't read For My Lady's Heart, which is on my classic challenge list. *grin* Haven't read Shadowheart either. But The Shadow And The Star is wonderful. *grin*

Jace, I am so glad you are joining! I just picked up To Love and To Cherish yesterday at the library.

I checked out your list and there are a lot of books I haven't heard of. I can't wait for you to review them. I will be interested to hear what you think.

I have read both of the Mary Stewart books you have listed and they are wonderful. I think she is a great writer. I hope you enjoy them.

Jennie,

I heard a lot of talk about Sweet, Savage love from posters on the message boards at RT (Romantic Times). It seems like an obnoxious epic romance, of the classic bodice ripper variety. I am hoping it will turn into a guilty pleasure for me. We shall see...

Yes, some of the books that I have in the TBR are obscure, especially those gothic ones that I love. *grin*

I discovered Mary Stewart last year, and proceeded to buy up whatever books I could. Some I got new, some from the UBS. The first book I read was Nine Coaches Waiting and I was blown away. I love her writing style - crisp, sparse and elegant. One gets the feeling that she didn't have to use extra words in order to tell the stories beautifully. *grin*

I love gothic books! I will be anxiously awaiting your reviews then.

Have you ever read Barbara Michaels? Her books have a very gothic feel to them. I actually discovered Michaels first and then someone recommended Stewart because of her similar writing style.

Jill, yes, I've read Barbara Michaels but just one - The Master Of Blacktower. I prefer Mary Stewart's writing style, to be honest. I thought Michaels' writing wasn't as evocative as Stewart's.

Jace,

I can see where you are coming from. I read Michaels first when I was a teenager and then discovered Stewart as an adult. Michaels has a special place in my heart. Maybe after you have glommed all of Stewart's books you might want to try more of Michaels. She has quite a backlist and I am sure many of the books will appeal to you.

One of the things that I drew me to Michael's books was the conversations between the characters. She has a way of bringing in humor but its subtle. Almost as if she is secretly making fun of her characters. I am not sure if I am discribing this right (actually I am sure I'm not), but I have always liked that about her.
