Touching Base

Hi Everyone. It has been a little while since I have touched base with you. I have some exciting news to share with you. I have joined a book club! A couple of ladies at my work belong to the same book club and have invited me to join with them. I went to the first meeting on Tuesday this week. We meet once a month.

This is not a romance book club per say, but these ladies are not opposed to reading romance. As a matter of fact, a couple months back one of the book choices was Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. This gave me a lot of hope that they might be willing to try books from the romance genre. Also, my co-worker A---, whom shall remain anonymous, loves historical romance and was reading a Christina Dodd book this week. Whoop! I recommended Jo Goodman to her (hee, hee).

The book club choice for this month was Play Dead by Harlan Coben. This is not a romance but I will be reviewing it shortly for those of you who are interested. It was very Sydney Sheldon-esq, not too bad for the first book.

There are eight of us in the book club and in alphabetical order each of us rotates choosing a book each month. The next book chosen is On Strike for Christmas by Sheila Roberts. I haven't read this author before but on the cover Debbie Macomber and Susan Wiggs have quotes praising the book, both of whom are romance authors - again another good sign.

It is such a treat to discover that people I know read and read romance on top of it! I can't wait until it's my month to choose a book. I might need some of your help with the decision making process. I'll keep you posted on how the book club works out.

Hi Jill,
I've been in a book club for the last 7 years. I loooove my book club. First I met some fantastic ladies. Second it's given me an opportunity to branch out and read a lot of different genres. I admit that if it wasn't for my book club I would only read romance novels. Don't get me wrong, I love my romance novels but there is a lot of other entertaining literature out there too (for example this year we read Still Alice and The Hunger Games-- both fantastic books but definitely not romances).

Anyway one of the things my book club did was start a website to keep track of how we scored books, what we liked etc.... Check it out if you'd like :) https://sites.google.com/site/sundaynightbookclub/

Congratulations Jill, bookclubs can be a great way to discover new authors and genres. I really enjoy Harlan Coben and I'll look forward to your review of Play Dead.

Yay, Jill! That's just cool :) It's fun to just hang out with people who likes to read, who understands the need to read :)

I hope you enjoy On Strike for Christmas. It was a very cute book :) Sheila Roberts doesn't write romance per se, but more women's fiction. Still, it's close enough to the romance genre :)

How fun Jill! I've always wanted to join a book club but I never could find a book club in my area where they'd be willing to read romance and then I gave up all together. I hope you keep us updated with your book club adventures!

Nicole - Wow, seven years?! That is a long time. It sounds like the friendships you build are long lasting. I think these ladies have been doing it for 4 years. I am so excited that they are letting me join. I know exactly what you mean about only reading romance. This will definitely help me "branch out"!

Hilcia - I had never read Harlan Coben before. Actually, I had never heard of him, LOL. Turns out he is a big name author. Play Dead is one of the first books he wrote back about 20 years ago. I would be curious to see how his writing has evolved.

Nath - Oh Cool, you have read the book! Okay, now I can look forward to it since you thought it was cute, LOL! I figured she was women's fiction-esq since Debbie Macomber and Susan Wiggs are as well and they have quotes on the cover.

Rowena - I am definitely going to keep you posted on my book club adventures.

Stay patient, you never know when you might meet a fellow romance reader and then you can start your own book club.

I'm jealous. :) And happy for you too! How wonderful to talk with people who get your love of books, and to do it in person is extra special. :)

I'm jealous! I wish I could join a romance book club local to me. (I don't know that I'd have the time or inclination to read non-romance). I joined ARRA (Australian Romance Readers Assoc.) but they don't seem to have anything going on here in Adelaide.. yet!
